Malaysia shock India

A goal in the dying seconds gave Malaysia a 2-1 victory over India and a place in the final of the five-nation under-21 men's invitational hockey tournament, at the National hockey stadium, in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, on Friday.

The victory gave the hosts three points and swelled their tally to eight, from two wins and two draws, which was enough to give them the top place in the league ahead of junior World champions Australia on better goal difference.[See table below].

Malaysia and Australia will clash for the title on Sunday, while India, who finished third in the league, with seven points, will play South Korea for the third/fourth place.

Like on many occasions in the past, India paid a heavy price for their prodigality. They should have wrapped up the match in the first-half itself but their forwards, Tejbir Singh in particular, just failed to beat goalkeeper Mohd Firdaus Ghazali and get the ball into the cage.

After a goalless first-half, Malaysia went ahead in the in the 53rd minute. Skipper Chua Boon Huat, who had failed from four penalty-corner attempts finally got his act correct and scored from the fifth one, beating Indian 'keeper Suraj Kanta Singh with a neat drag flick from a set-piece variation.

However, India equalised in the 62nd minute through Rajpal Singh following a penalty-corner.

But with seconds ticking away for the hooter, Malaysia broke away and Nor Azlan Rahim beat goalkeeper Kanta Singh with a rasping shot to clinch victory.

In another match, played later, South Korea beat England 6-1 to take the fourth place in the league.

It was the first victory for the Koreans after a draw and two defeats.

Korea went ahead through a penalty-corner goal by Oh Dae Hun within two minutes from the start and Seong Jong Ho made it 2-0 in the 19th minute. The scoreline stayed that way till the breather.

In the second session, the Koreans added three more goals through Kim Chul (38th minute), Cha Jong Bok (46th minute), Yoon Sung Hoon (61st minute) from a penalty-stroke and Kim Byung Hoon (68th minute) from a penalty-corner.

Simon Ramsden scored in the last minute to give England a consolation goal.
