Sunil Kumar wins Tata Futures

Top seed Sunil Kumar Sipaeya of Chandigarh won the Tata Futures tennis championships beating Punna Vishal of Andhra Pradesh 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the Madras Club in Chennai.

The doubles final played in the morning saw Jaco Mathew and Somdev Devburman living up to their top seed billing defeating Amanjot Singh and Saurabh Kohli in three sets 1-6, 6-0, 6-4.

The singles final saw Vishal shoot up to a 3-0 lead breaking Sunil in the second game. However, Sunil stepped up with fluent drives to both the flanks to draw level at 3-3 breaking Vishal in the fifth game. The tenth game saw Sunil serving a double fault at a crucial time to surrender his serve and the set.

In the second set, the games went with serve till the fifth game. In the six game, Vishal broke Sunil to lead 4-2. When it seemed like Vishal might run away with the match, Sunil showed his true class and reeled off the next four games to stay strong in the match. Vishal's service was broken in the seventh and the ninth games. The set ended in Sunil's favour at 6-4.

Sunil jumped to a 3-0 lead in the third set by breaking Vishal in the first and the third games but lost the advantage when he was broken in the fourth and the sixth games. The games went with serve thereafter till the eighth game. Vishal took Sunil to the edge but finally lost out when he could not hold serve in the ninth game allowing Sunil to take the championship.
