Tyagi bags gold at Asian jr. athleticsAmit Tyagi won India's lone gold medal in shot put while Mukti Saha excelled in the women's sprints, winning two silvers and a bronze, at the ninth Asian junior athletics championships in Brunei, from July 19 to 22. Indian athletes returned with won one gold, six silvers and three bronze medals for a total haul of ten, according to a statement from the Amateur Athletic Federation of India. Tyagi's grabbed the gold with an effort that measured 17.66 metres. Mukti Saha emerged the second fastest women of the meet, winning the 100 metres silver in 11.90 seconds. She won her second silver in the 100 metres hurdles with a timing of 14.12 seconds. She also won the 200 metres bronze, clocking 24.12 seconds. Golden hope Seema Antil had to rest content with a silver in the women's discuss after clearing 53.54 metres. The fourth individual silver medal was won by Manjit Kaur in the 400 metres, finishing in 55.11 seconds. Both the men's and women's 1600 metres relay teams emerged with a silver each. The men's quartet of P Shankar, K Suresh, Sheik Samser and Dharmender Hansda were second, clocking 3:12:15 seconds and the women's team of Bindu Rani, S Geetha, Pratima Goankar and Manjeet Kaur won the medal clocking 3:42:22 seconds. Rakesh Kumar won the bronze in the men's hammer throw with a heave of 60.69 metres while Archana Bara acheived the same feat in women's event with an effort of 44.79 metres. The Indian contingent comprising 15 boys and 14 girls returned from Brunei on Monday.
