Three seeds were beaten on the opening day of men's singles competition at the World badminton championships on Tuesday.

Tenth seed Richard Vaughan of Wales, Britain's top rated singles player who was struggling with a shoulder injury picked up at the weekend, went out in the first round 15-10, 15-7 to Chen Yu of China.

The Welshman was followed out by Sweden's George Rimarcdi, seeded 16, who lost to France's Bertrand Gallet 17-14, 8-15, 15-7, and 15th-seeded South Korean Shon Seung-mo, ousted 10-15, 17-16, 15-7 in 103 minutes by Lee Tsuen Seng of Malaysia.

Seng's compatriot, top seed Roslin Hashim, is safely through to the second round after beating India's Abhinn Gupta 17-15, 15-5.

In the women's singles, there was a morale booster for defending champion Camilla Martin of Denmark, who beat South Korea's Jun Jae-youn 11-4, 11-6.

In her last match at the San Pablo complex in the Sudirman Cup semifinals on Friday she was thrashed 11-1, 11-0 by Olympic champion Gong Zhichao of China.

Martin said: "I am relieved to win after what happened the other day. I didn't get over that until Sunday."
