India win hockey series on goal difference

True to expectations, India lifted the glittering Videocon Cup after it won the four-Test junior hockey series against Malaysia on a better goal difference.

The concluding match of the series at the Begumpet grounds, in Hyderabad, on Friday, ended in a 1-1 draw.

India won the first Test 3-1. The teams drew the second 2-2, while Malaysia won the third 2-1.

As both teams had the same number of points, the winner of the series was determined on the basis of more goals scored. India had seven to their credit while Malaysia six.

In Friday's match, Prabjhot Singh put India ahead with a goal in the 17th minute. He latched on to a cross from Somesh Kantha and hit home on the run.

The Malaysians restored parity two minutes form the breather through opportunist Zahrin.

After the break, both teams had chances to clinch the issue but their forwards displayed woeful finishing.
