Real Madrid maintain perfect start

French champions Nantes, languishing at the bottom of their domestic league, continued their schizophrenic start to the season with a 3-1 win at Lazio to go top of Champions League group D on Wednesday.

The defeat -- leaving Lazio without a point after two matches -- puts renewed pressure on coach Dino Zoff whose job was already looking shaky.

His future is likely to be decided at a meeting on Thursday morning with Lazio's general manager Massimo Cragnotti saying it was being held to discuss their poor start to the season.

"We have decided to hold a meeting tomorrow to discuss what has happened and try to explain the situation we are in and then we will decide. We want to discuss things in a calm manner."

Italian media reports have suggested Zoff could return to a position such as technical director or club president, with former AC Milan coach Alberto Zaccheroni taking charge.

While Nantes were winning in Rome, Real Madrid, like Nantes, continued their erratic start to the season.

PERFECT START

Real, without a win in three Spanish league matches, maintained their 100 per cent start to the Champions League campaign with a 4-0 home win over Lokomotiv Moscow in group A.

Spanish international Pedro Munitis made the most of a rare first team appearance to score Real's first goal six minutes before the break, with Luis Figo (64pen), Roberto Carlos (81) and Savio (87) adding the others.

Anderlecht drew 0-0 with AS Roma in the same group in Brussels, leaving Real top with six points, already four clear of Anderlecht and Lokomotiv Moscow on two points each.

Panathinaikos were the third team on the night to pick up their second successive victory thanks to their 2-0 home win over Real Mallorca in group C.

They moved to the top of group C with a confident win over Mallorca with Goran Vlaovic (25) and Michalis Konstantinou (28) scoring the goals.

In the same group, Arsenal beat Schalke 04 3-2 at Highbury in a match neither team could afford to lose after both were defeated in their opening matches last week.

In the most exciting match of the night Arsenal lead 2-0 and 3-1 thanks to goals from Fredrik Ljungberg (33) and Thierry Henry (35 and 47pen).

But Schalke gave the London side a fright with goals from Marco van Hoogdalen (43) and Emile Mpenza (59) and they almost stole a point when substitute Gerald Asamoah hit the crossbar after 74 minutes.

Panathinaikos have six points, Arsenal and Mallorca three and Schalke none.

Wednesday's results mean Schalke in group C and Lazio in group D are the only teams without a point after two matches.

REAL SHOCK

Nantes' victory against Lazio was a real shock as before the match even most of the French team wrote off their own chances after starting the new season with two draws and five defeats in their opening seven French league matches.

Nantes were also without five first team regulars but once they went ahead after only three minutes they were too good for Lazio, now without a win in five matches after three draws in Serie A and their two Champions League defeats.

Nantes took an early lead through Nestor Fabbri (3), and although Fernando Couto scored Lazio's equaliser just three minutes later, further goals from Sylvain Armand (63) and Stephane Ziani (86) secured Nantes the points.

In the same group PSV Eindhoven beat Galatasaray 3-1 in a match played in Arnhem because UEFA banned PSV from using their own ground after crowd trouble against Kaiserslautern last season.

Nantes have six points, PSV and Galatasaray three and Lazio none.

In Group B Liverpool returned to Dortmund where they won the UEFA Cup beating Spanish side Alaves 5-4 in May, but there were no goals on Wednesday as Borussia's defence proved far tougher to break down and the sides played out a 0-0 draw.

Boavista defeated Dynamo Kiev 3-1 in the other match in the group to go top with four points followed by Liverpool and Dortmund on two and Kiev with one.
