Davis Cup heroes emerge in weekend action
America's Andy Roddick carried the weight of a nation on his 19-year-old shoulders, Fabrice Santoro saved France with a vintage performance and Argentina scraped into their first semifinal since 1990 after a see-saw weekend of Davis Cup action.
Daring to be different, the Russian pairing of Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin refused to hang around, however, and tied up their quarter-final against Sweden with a day to spare.
The Russians now wait to host the Argentines in September's semifinals.
Having never beaten seven-times champions Sweden coming into the tie, Kafelnikov and Safin turned history on its head and swept into an unassailable 3-0 lead by Saturday evening.
"Now the work is done we can celebrate," grinned Safin after the decisive doubles victory.
But for the U.S., champions France and Argentina, the celebrations had to wait until the final day of team action.
On the grass courts of the Westside Tennis Club, Roddick maintained his 100 percent Cup record with two singles victories after seven-times Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras had earlier in the fixture lost in one of the biggest shocks in the event's history.
Grasscourt master Sampras let a two-sets-to-love lead slip against baseliner Alex Corretja on the opening day to hand Spain a lifeline after Roddick had earlier beaten Tommy Robredo put them 1-0 up.
HOME FANS
The three hour 56 minute 4-6, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-4 win by Corretja was only his fourth on grass in a 12-year career.
"I would like to be in Europe when the people there read in the morning that Corretja beat Sampras on grass," the Spaniard said afterwards.
Sampras was looking for his 100th win on grass. The defeat was only the second time he had lost a five-set match on the fast surface.
Corretja, however, injured himself in that match and was forced to pull out of Saturday's doubles, which Spain then lost.
He could not play in the second singles either and Roddick overwhelmed substitute Alberto Martin 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.
The American went into a frenzy after clinching the tie, diving onto his back and then running around the court to the delight of the home fans.
"I have to go with what I feel. I can't control myself," he said. "There's no other feeling like having the crowd behind you."
France, who will host the U.S. in September's semifinals, had their own hero to fete after singles substitute Fabrice Santoro stepped up at the last minute and pulled off a five-set match-winning victory over the Czech Republic's Bohdan Ulihrach.
Santoro, the French team's doubles specialist, wrestled with Ulihrach for four hours and 15 minutes before finally taming him 7-6, 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3 in the second reverse singles.
Santoro, who helped France to a 2-1 lead when he partnered Michael Llodra on Saturday, replaced the injured Nicolas Escude on the final day.
EMOTIONAL VICTORY
The emotional victory was reminiscent of Santoro's first when he beat Australia's Wally Masur in Nimes in 1991 earning his first cap.
"It's great. It takes me back 11 years. I still have this victory in my mind," an exhausted Santoro said on Sunday. "The atmosphere was just the same."
Coach Guy Forget was thrilled by Santoro's performance. "It's fantastic to have had Fabrice in the singles. He was only considered a doubles player," he said.
"He has been waiting for this opportunity for five or six years. And today he gave it his all and he won."
Santoro had not played a singles match in the Davis Cup since the playoff against Belgian Filip Dewulf when France were relegated from the World Group in 1997.
On Sunday, the Frenchman at last got his chance to make amends and did not disappoint.
Argentina also kept their feverish fans on tenterhooks until the fifth and final match of the tie before finally beating an under-strength Croatia 3-2.
Gaston Gaudio won the deciding match against Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in front of Argentine soccer great Diego Maradona.
Croatia's talisman and Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic had ruled himself out of the singles with a nagging shoulder injury but he did play in the doubles.
Ivanisevic inspired his nation by teaming up with Ivan Ljubicic to beat Lucas Arnold and Guillermo Canas 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, 8-6 -- saving a match point along the way.
Boosted by that staunch resistance, Ljubicic evened things up on Sunday beating Juan Ignacio Chela 6-3, 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 to give Croatia a chance to dream.
But Gaudio swiftly snuffed out any notions of an upset at the Buenos Aires Tennis Club, dominating Karlovic from the start.
"This is the happiest moment of my life, nothing compares to it," said Gaudio, who applauded Maradona when the former World Cup captain appeared in the arena.
"When I saw Diego, I told myself that everything was set up for me to win."
There were also two big upsets which went unnoticed as Finland defeated Italy 4-1 and Canada beat Chile 5-0, with Daniel Nestor defeating Marcelo Rios 7-6(1), 6-7(2), 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.
Nestor and Niemeier won five setters against Rios and Fernando Gonzales, and won the doubles the next day to upset Chile on the second day itself.
Both upsets were about as ridiculously unexpected as Sampras's defeat.
Weekend summary
Eighteen zonal ties in Groups I and II also took place from April 5 to 7, with many nations battling for promotion.
Seven nations have won Group I matches in their respective regions and will take part in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Qualifying Round between September 20 to 22: Finland, Zimbabwe, Romania, Belgium, Canada, Thailand and India. The eighth and final nation to take its place in the Qualifying Round will be the winner of the Venezuela v Ecuador tie, suspended until Monday morning due to rain.
In the World Group Qualifying Round, these eight nations will join those which lost their first round World Group ties in February - Australia, Brazil, Germany, Great Britain, Morocco, Netherlands, Slovak Republic and Switzerland - in a battle for the eight available places in the 2003 World Group. Eight of the 16 countries competing will be seeded, and the seedings will be announced on Tuesday, April 9. The Draw for the event follows on Wednesday, April 10 at 11:00 hours London time (GMT 10:00 hours).
Four nations have had less successful weekends, and as a result of losing their respective Group II play-off ties will be relegated to compete in a lower zonal group in 2003. Guatemala and Trinidad & Tobago will play in American Zone Group III next year, while Kuwait and Malaysia will play in Asia/Oceania Zone Group III.
