Canas makes it to the semi-finals
Top seed Guillermo Canas of Argentina made it to the semi-finals by default as Jiri Vanek from Cezch
Republic conceded the match after trailing 5-7 1-1 in the Tata Open ATP Tour Tennis championship in Chennai on Friday.
Playing on the centre court for the third day running, Canas seemed to be bogged down after having to fight for first set victory. Vanek retired with severe back ache after losing the first set 5-7 and trailing 0-15 in the third game with scoreline reading one-all in the second set.
Canas was made to fight for every point in the tough first set as Vanek played some inspired tennis.
Vanek continued with the same intensity for a few more games as Vanek frustrated Canas playing the big points well. The Argentine was composed and was trying to tire out Vanek making him go for the corners. But the Czech was equal to the task though inconsistent.
In the first set, the games went with serve right upto the 11th game. Canas finally got the much needed break in a game which went to duece four times
Canas now awaits the winner of the match between Karol Kucera (Slovakia) and Fabrice Santoro (France).
