Fulham, Middlesbrough and York advance in Cup

Second division Wycombe's dreams of another season of English FA Cup glory disappeared on Tuesday when Barry Hayles gave premier league Fulham a 1-0 third round replay victory at Craven Cottage.

Hayles produced an excellent individual finish in the 68th minute to earn Fulham a fourth round trip to third division York, who beat first division Grimsby 1-0 in a third round upset on Tuesday.

Premier league Middlesbrough advanced to a plum home clash with Manchester United after beating Wimbledon 2-0 in their third round replay at the Riverside.

Wycombe, who beat Leicester City last season to reach the semifinals, had been two minutes away from winning the original tie a week ago only for Steve Marlet to earn Fulham a 2-2 draw.

Goalscoring opportunities were much harder to come by in Tuesday's replay with both sides seemingly more concerned about defending.

Fulham gradually got on top, however, and made the breakthrough when Hayles picked up the ball in midfield and jinked though two tackles before shooting firmly home from the edge of the box.

Wycombe had Jason Cousins sent off for a second booking soon afterwards and from then on Fulham were in control.

Wimbledon knocked Middlesbrough out of both cups last season but after a goalless draw in the third round 10 days ago, the Londoners had little to trouble the premier league side.

OFFSIDE TRAP

Noel Whelan sprung the offside trap to put Middlesbrough ahead after three minutes.

David Connolly missed a great chance to equalise for Wimbledon midway through the second half but he sidefooted wide and Middlesbrough took advantage when Kenny Cunningham slid the ball into his own net nine minutes from time.

York, third-from-bottom of the third division and caught in the middle of a bitter ownership fight, were always on top in their replay against Grimsby and should have more than just Alan Neilson's 17th minute own goal to show for their efforts.

First division Preston were similarly dominant away at second division Brighton, winning 2-0 to go through to host Sheffield United.

Eric Skora put them ahead early on and after Brighton's Bobby Zamora had a penalty saved, Jon Macken settled it when his speculative long shot squeezed in in the 63rd minute

Third division Darlington looked on their way for a money-spinning local derby against Newcastle United when they led 2-0 against Peterborough but a missed penalty and a good comeback by the second division side meant it ended 2-2.

Crewe beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 in an all-first division clash and will play either Rotherham or Southampton, who meet on Wednesday.
