Amanjot Singh goes down tamely

Indian junior Amanjot Singh crashed out of the boys' singles at the Australian Open on Tuesday.

Singh, who was the lone Indian in the main draw, lost to Robert Smeets of Australia 3-6, 3-6 in a first round match.

Too many unforced errors cost the Indian the match. Actually, the players had 79 unforced errors between themselves, out of which the Indian had 45 and the Aussie 34.

The players traded breaks early and then Amanjot dropped serve in the seventh and ninth games to lose the first set.

In the second set, Singh was behind again at 2-4, but he came back with a break in the seventh game, which was followed by a drop of serve in the next game as he lost the match.

In the girls' singles, Megha Vakharia was trailing 2-6, 2-3 to the second seed Marion Bartoli of France when a rain interruption forced the match to be resumed on Wednesday.

12th seed Sania Mirza's first round match against Ivana Jovanovich of New Zealand will also be played on Wednesday.

In the boys' doubles, Amanjot Singh and Rohan Gajjar will face the fourth seeded pair of Brian Baker of the United States and Frank Dancevic of Canada while Rishi Behl and Yu-Da Shieh of Chinese Taipei will take on second seeds Philipp Petzschner of Germany and Robin Soderling of Sweden in the first round.

Stephen Amritraj of the United States and Luka Gregorc of Slovakia are the top seeds.

In the girls' doubles, Sania Mirza is partnering Da-Jung Hong of Korea and will face the American pair of Nicole Pitts and Sunitha Rao in the first round. Sania's partner at the Victorian juniors title-run, Linda Smolenakova, is playing with country-mate Kristina Czaficova and the duo are seeded seventh.

If they advnace, they may run into the top seeds Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia and Matea Mezak of Crotia in the second round.

Sasha Abraham and Megha Vakharia are also in the draw and will face the Australian pair of Gabrielle Baker and Adriana Szili in the first round.

It will be a tough match for the Indians as Adriana is one of the most promising Australian youngsters.

The junior doubles action starts on Wednesday.
