Scolari harrassed in the street over Romario
Brazil coach Luiz Felipe "Big Phil" Scolari was harassed in the centre of Rio de Janeiro on Friday afternoon by a group of supporters demanding he include veteran striker Romario in his World Cup squad.
A Reuters reporter at the scene said that Scolari had to force his way through a group of around 50 angry fans as he walked around 50 metres from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) headquarters to his car following a meeting.
The fans chanted Romario's name, insulted Scolari with cries of "donkey, donkey, donkey" and pushed and shoved him. They then kicked and punched his car as it drove away but witnesses said he ignored the provocation and did not make any comment.
The supporters had gathered outside the CBF building to pressure the national team staff, who were meeting to discuss the Brazilian World Cup squad which will be announced on Monday.
The big question is whether Scolari will include Romario at the last minute in what would be a startling about-turn.
Scolari has not selected Romario since the 1-0 World Cup qualifying defeat away to Uruguay last July, citing "technical and tactical reasons."
His decision has caused endless controversy as the charismatic forward, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 1994, remains one of Brazil's top strikers, having averaged more than one goal a game in club football this year.
Team doctor Jose Luis Runco said Brazil had no major injury worries.
"There are a few minor injuries which can be easily cured but no major problems," he said.
