Aliu upstages Greene and Williams
July 02, 2003 16:26 IST
Olympic and world 100 metres champion Maurice Greene and U.S. champion Bernard Williams were upstaged by Nigerian Deji Aliu in the Lausanne Grand Prix on Tuesday.
The sprint had been billed as a head-to-head between Greene and Williams, but Aliu outgunned the pair to win in 10.04 seconds.
"I feel very good, in good shape, and I'm very happy with that performance," said Aliu, who clocked 10 seconds flat in winning the 100 metres at last week's Grand Prix in Trikala, Greece.
Williams pipped Greene for second place with a time of 10.10, one hundredth of a second ahead of his fellow American in the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise.
World record holder Tim Montgomery had also been due to compete, but withdrew on Monday after his partner, triple Olympic champion Marion Jones, gave birth to a baby boy.
