Rastogi in last 8

October 09, 2003 18:08 IST

Fourth seed Karan Rastogi, who celebrated his 17th birthday on Wednesday, had much to cheer about after beating big-serving Phillip Oswald of Austria 7-5, 6-2 in the pre-quarter-finals in Osaka Mayor's Cup World Super Junior tennis championships on Thursday.

He meets Woong Sun Jun of Korea in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Games went with serve until Rastogi broke the 6 feet 4 inches Austrian's serve in the 12th game to take the first set 7-5.

Rastogi was broken in the third and fifth games in the second set, but that did not deter him from taking the set and match at 6-2.

It may be recalled that Rastogi had reached the quarter-finals in the same event in the previous year. He is a trainee at the National Tennis Academy.

The Indian combination of Divij Sharan and Arun Prakash, seeded No. 2 in the boys' doubles event, moved into the semi-finals without breaking sweat.

They got a walkover from Todd Ley (Australia) and Marc Spicijaric (USA) in the quarter-finals.

The Osaka Mayor's Cup is the penultimate Grade A event of the year. It has the same points as a Grand Slam for grabs.
