Yuri Schukin shocks De Voest

October 18, 2003 19:51 IST

Russia's Yuri Schukin shocked fourth seed Rik De Voest of South Africa 6-0, 6-3 to storm into the final of the Belgaum Open ATP Challenger on Saturday.

The unseeded Russian took just over an hour to knock out his fancied opponent, who was the sole seeded player left in the fray.

De Voest, who had given a good account of himself in earlier matches, failed to play to his potential and appeared off-colour today. On the other hand, Schukin rose to the occasion and played a controlled game.

Germany's Dieter Kindlmann claimed the other final berth after overcoming stiff resistance from Slovakian Branislav Sekac to win 7-6(7-2), 6-2 in one hour, 26 minutes.

The singles and doubles final will be played tomorrow.

In the doubles final, the Indian pair of Mustafa Ghouse and Vishal Uppal will clash with the Slovakian duo of Michal Mertinak and Sekac.
