Clijsters to miss French Open

May 08, 2004 12:07 IST

World number two Kim Clijsters will not be playing at the French Open later this month because she has to give her wrist more time to recover from a recurrent injury, her coach said on Friday.

"She has to rest for at least five weeks," Marc Dehous told the Belgian radio network VRT Radio One. "Otherwise it could well become a chronic wrist injury."

Asked whether she would participate at Roland Garros, Dehous said: "Certainly not".

The Belgian's participation had already been in doubt after she pulled out of the German Open in Berlin on Thursday due to the injury and declared that she would not play in Rome next week.

"I just came from the doctor and it's not just the wrist that's the problem," Dehous said. "There's also an accumulation of fluid around the tendons."

Clijsters's withdrawal from the French Open was also announced on her official website (www.kimclijsters.be).
