Border Security Force, Jallandhar, came from behind to outplay Army XI 2-1 in the final of the 110th Indian Oil [Get Quote] - Beighton Cup hockey tournament in Kolkata on Wednesday.
BSF, considered the underdogs against the Army outfit, staged a sudden turnaround after conceding a 40th minute goal, scored by Dhanujay Mahadik, and scored twice in nine minutes to win the match and lift their sixth Beighton Cup title at the CCFC ground.
Man-of-the-match Harpinder Singh drew level for BSF through a field goal in the 44th minute before in-form Marianus Lakra scored the winner from a long corner in the 53rd minute.
The armymen, who had to rest content with the runners-up tag for the second successive year, made desperate attempts at the rival goal in the dying minutes but failed to get past the defensive wall.
BSF coach Kuljit Singh attributed the victory to his team's experience on grass while Army XI skipper and Olympian Ignace Tirkey blamed 'minor lapses' for the debacle.
The armymen, who had edged past formidable Indian Oil 4-3 in the last four stage, were also to blame for lack of precision finishing by their forwards as they failed to convert any of the eight penalty-corners they forced.
The champions were presented a cheque of Rs 1.25 lakh while runners-up Army XI got Rs 75,000.
