World junior champion Pendyala Harikrishna's fine run in the International Invitational chess tournament in Bermuda was halted by Boris Gelfand of Israel in the eighth round.

The Indian's first defeat in the tournament proved costly as Harikrishna, who was in the joint lead after the seventh round, slipped to joint third spot with four points after eight rounds.

Gelfand moved into the sole lead for the first time with five points and is now followed by Cuban Grandmaster Lenier Dominiguez, on 4.5.

With just two rounds remaining in the category-17 double round-robin tournament, Harikrishna and Giovani Vescovi of Brazil [Images] are next in line while Ukraine's Andrei Volokitin is fifth on 3.5 after pushing Bartlomiej Macieja of Poland (3) back to the bottom of standings on a decisive Monday.

For once, the predictable draws in the event took a back seat and cashing in most was Gelfand, who won a chanceless encounter against Harikrishna.

Playing the black side of a Catalan opening, Harikrishna was outdone in the middle game by his experienced rival after the opening went along trodden paths.

Quite interestingly, the Catalan holds a prominent place in the repertoire of Harikrishna too with white pieces and given the fact a better show was expected from him.

As it happened in the game, Gelfand came out with a tangible advantage in the middle game and nurtured it well to get a decisive attack against black's weak pawns on the queen side.

Faced with material loss, Harikrishna got his queen under troubles and lost two pawns in succession. The rest was easy for Gelfand as he knocked down a rook for knight before converting his overwhelming position into a full point.

Dominguez defeated Vescovi in a finely crafted game arising out of a Ruy Lopez where the former played white. The Brazilian went for the Tchgorin variation and got himself in to unsolvable problems when Dominiguez penetrated his rook to the seventh rank and forcibly won a pawn.

Vescovi put up a brave front thereafter but right deployment of forces by Dominiguez forced a pawn plus endgame where technicalities remained.

However, a brilliant piece sacrifice by Dominiguez sealed blacks fate completely as the Cuban cleaned up one pawn after another to reach a winning position. Vescovi called it a day on his 74th turn.

If Dominguez showcased his positional brilliance, Volokitin gave a lesson on attack to Macieja.

It was a Sicilian Taimanov with pieces by Macieja and he did not know what hit him in the middle game as Volokitin gave two rooks for the queen to get his attack rolling.

Finding little respite for his king, Macieja sought some counter play with Rooks invasion but the Ukrainian champion not only steered his king to safety but also kept his attack going. Volokitin resigned when whites queen and knight coordinated perfectly to deliver the knockout blow.
