Seema Antil wins women's discus silver

Seema Antil landed India's first athletics medal at the 18th Commonwealth Games in Melbourne on Tuesday, clinching the silver in the women's discus throw.

She recorded a season-best performance of 60.56 metres to take the second place on the podium behind Elizna Naude of South Africa, who cleared 61.55 metres.

Local lass Dani Samuel bagged the bronze with a throw of 59.44 metres.

Two more Indians finished in the top eight, as Krishna Poonia (58.65m) and Harwant kaur (57.64m) placed fifth and seventh respectively.

Vikas Gowda finished third in his group and qualified for the men's discus throw final, with an effort of 60.25m, the fourth-best throw overall.

In the women's heptathlon, J J Shobha, Soma Biswas and Sushmita Singha Ray are placed 9, 10,  and 12th respectively after the first day's events.
