Sher-e-Jalandhar thrashed a hapless Chennai Veerans 6-0 in a Premier Hockey League match in Chandigarh on Friday.
Discarded India striker Gagan Ajit Singh, the leading goal-scorer in the tournament, found the target thrice as the Shers swelled their points' tally to 20. They now have only league leaders Orissa Steelers ahead of them.
The yawning gaps in the Veerans' defence, who are placed down the table with 13 points, were fully exploited by the opposition.
Gagan Ajit first struck early in the second quarter, finishing off a nice attacking move, the ball getting deflected into goal off a Veeran defender.
Gagan was again on the mark in the seventh minute of the second half, scoring with a reverse flick from an acute angle.
Further damage was inflicted on the Veerans by Tejbir Singh, who scored twice.
In a well thought out move, 24-year-old Santi Freixa broke into the Veerans' defence and laid a pass for Tejbir, who scored in the 13th minute of the second half.
A diving Tejbir again found the target in the fourth quarter off another good pass from Freixa.
Kanwalpreet Singh scored the fifth goal from a penalty-corner while Gagan Ajit pumped in the sixth, beating the Veerans' defence and opposition goalkeeper Shanumugam hands down.
Veerans, who put up a disappointing show, failed to earn a single penalty-corner as against four by the Shers.
