Chanderpaul, Rose top averages in Cable and Wireless Series

Middle-order batsman Shivnaraine Chanderpaul and new-comer Franklin Rose topped the batting and bowling averages, respectively, in the just-concluded five-Test Cable & Wireless Series between the West Indies and India, which the former won by virtue of a 38-run victory in the Bridgetown Test.

Chanderpaul made 443 runs with the help of a century and three fifties, at an impressive average of 73.83. His aggregate is also the highest in the rubber. Compatriot Rose, playing in his debut series, claimed 18 wickets at a rate of 22.33 runs apiece with a rich haul of six for 100 in his first Test innings at Jamaica. Both appeared for their side in all five Tests.

For India, rising star Rahul Dravid bagged the batting honours, amassing 360 runs with four fifties, at an average of 72. On the bowling front, leg-spinner Anil Kumble was the highest wicket-taker on both sides, with 19 scalps though at the expensive average of 30.32. Skipper Sachin Tendulkar (289 runs), Navjot Singh Sidhu (276 runs), Abey Kuruvilla (13 wickets), Venkatesh Prasad and Sunil Joshi (11 wickets each) were the other prominent contributors for the touring team.
