India-Sri Lanka ODI finals - Head to head
Neighbours India and Sri Lanka met each other for the first time at Old
Trafford, Manchester, on June 16, 1979, during the preliminary round of the
1979 World Cup. The Lankans, who were then an ICC associate member, caused the
first ever upset in World Cup history when they beat India by 47 runs. Since
then the two teams have met each other on 69 occasions, with India
winning 36 matches, and the Lankans 28. Five other matches were declared
as 'no-result'.
The two teams will meet each other again on Sunday for the eighth time in an ODI tournament final. The first occasion these two teams clashed in a tournament final was in the Asia Cup in 1988, which India won. The last time was at Sharjah, in October last year, when the
Lankans won easily by a huge margin of 245 runs!
