Coca-Cola Triangular in Sri Lanka India play Sri Lanka today in the final for the Coca-Cola Cup at the Premadasa Stadium at Colombo in a day-night encounter. Although the Indians have won their last three matches in style, which enabled them to qualify for the final, there is still some cause for concern in their abilities when it comes to playing a decider match. Since April 1999, India has reached the final of a one-day tournament on seven occasions and has been on the losing side on all these occasions. The Ashes Test series Australia retained the Ashes when it won the third Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham easily by seven wickets with more than two days of play to spare. Resuming at the overnight score of 144-6, the home side was soon dismissed for 162. Shane Warne (6-33) and Jason Gillespie (3-61) were the main wicket-takers. Needing just 158 runs to record its third straight win of the series, the Aussies went about in a professional manner and achieved the target in less than 30 overs. Australia has now won 18 matches out of the last 20 played since October 1999. This incidentally was Australia's seventh Ashes series win a row, which is the best by any Australian side since the beginning of the Ashes in 1882. It is now reported that Waugh may not take any further part in this series and may have well played his last Test match in England.
Miscellaneous Dashing opener Virender Sehwag has been awarded Rs one lakh (about US$ 2130) by his employers the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) for his match winning 70-ball hundred in the final league match against New Zealand last Thursday. Sehwag works as an administrative officer with the ONGC. Three persons were arrested in Hisar, town in the state of Haryana in northern India for their alleged involvement in a betting racket during the India and New Zealand match of the Coca Cola Cup triangular one-day series on Thursday. Four mobile phones, three TV sets, and about Rs 6000 in cash were seized from them.
The president of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), Rev. Wesley Hall, will deliver the sermon at the funeral service of former West Indies fast bowler, Roy Gilchrist, in Jamaica today. Hall, a former fast bowler and a team-mate of the late cricketer, will represent the WICB at the funeral. Hall described Gilchrist as "his mentor" and "one of the early legends of West Indies fast bowling." Gilchrist, died on July 18. The Bradman museum has hired a forensic detective to fight a lucrative black market engaged in fake Bradman memorabilia. The detective Chris Anderson has a database, which includes over 100 Bradman signatures dated between 1926 and 2000, which would authenticate the various cricket bats and books bearing the signature of the late batting legend that are auctioned regularly.

The Sri Lankan media has criticised the Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly for his on-field behavior, which invited the wrath of ICC match referee Cammie Smith twice within the same week. One newspaper said that Ganguly's actions are sullying the good name of Indian cricket, while another paper reported that Ganguly will certainly not go down as a captain who upheld the spirit of the game. Former Indian opener Navjot Singh Sidhu, now a television commentator, has also been criticised for "jumping to Ganguly's defence".
Meanwhile, the vanquished captain Mike Atherton has put up a brave front, when he declared that England can still win the last two Test matches coming up at Leeds and the Oval. He said he was happy with the performance of his bowlers, but it is the form of his batsmen that's causing worry.
Waqar Younis will remain as captain of Pakistan for the series against the touring New Zealanders and also for the forthcoming Asian Test Championship. It seems the PCB chairman Lt Gen Tauqir Zia is satisfied with Waqar's showing as captain during the recent England tour and is happy that the cricketer has set a good example with his leadership.
