India withdraw from Asian Test Championships
Pakistan has threatened to pull out of next year's ICC Knockout tournament to be held in India in retaliation of India withdrawing from the forthcoming Asian Test Championships (ATC). Meanwhile Bangladesh will play Pakistan in Multan next week in the first round of the Asian Test Championship.

Indian sports minister Ms Uma Bharti today said the decision to pull India out of the Asian Test Championship cannot be reviewed to suit the BCCI and moreover it was a government policy decision.

The Indian Government's decision not to allow the Indian team to participate in the Asian Test Championship will mean that the ACC will incur heavy financial losses. The Asian Cricket Council's secretary Zakir Hussain Syed warned the financial losses alone would damage the sport in Asia, where India was the main draw-card for international sponsors and television coverage.

Wasim Akram has been included for the Asian Test Championship game against Bangladesh from August 29 at Multan. The selectors, including chairman Wasim Bari and members Mohsin Khan, Aaqib Javed and Shafiq Ahmed, after watching Wasim's performance in the two-day trial game here at the National stadium, Karachi are convinced he is fit and is in good bowling form for the coming Test. Wasim was initially not invited for the national training camp set up here earlier this month in preparation for the Test match.
New Zealand tour to Pakistan
The New Zealand Cricket Council (NZCC) has put the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in a quandary. The former has come up with an unusual request - a five feet ice tubs at all centers for the forthcoming series in Pakistan. It seems the ice tubs will assist the visitors to counter the scorching heat and humid conditions in Pakistan. The players, after returning from the field, will first stand in the ice tub and then proceed for showers or changing kits. Meanwhile the PCB officials are consulting specialists so that such tubs can be made available to the visitors. It may be recalled Australia used ice jackets last season during their tour of India.

Meanwhile, the New Zealand cricket manager Jeff Crowe, who had inspected the facilities in Pakistan earlier this month has also demanded that the PCB upgrade the players' dressing rooms. Crowe wants the dressing rooms be made air-conditioned as in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The PCB has termed the demand as "unrealistic".
India in Sri Lanka
It was a day where the fortunes of both the sides fluctuated wildly. The Indian bowling attack seemed to have direction early in the day and it took an excellent century from Mahela Jayawardene to help the Sri Lankans reach 274-9 at stumps on the first day of the second Test match at Kandy. Chaminda Vaas with an unbeaten 42 held the tail together. For the Indians, Zaheer Khan was the most successful bowler claiming 3-62.
Australia in England
Australia have dropped Michael Slater for the fifth and final Test match to be played at the Oval. Slater on hearing the news said he would be talking to the selectors to find out what they expected of him.
There are others who feel that Slater has been dropped for disciplinary reasons. It seems he had over slept and missed the team bus to a training session. However skipper Steve Waugh insisted that he had been dropped solely because of poor form (170 runs, avg. 24.28, in 4 Tests) but added there could be related issues as well that the selection panel considers.
Interestingly, Slater will be replaced by Justin Langer, who too has not been in good form during the tour matches.

England all-rounder Alex Tudor is out of the Ashes series because of a hip injury. With Alan Mullally also being ruled out with a side injury, now either Richard Johnson or James Ormond are sure to make their Test debut for England in the last Test at the Oval. Left-arm spinner Phil Tufnell is the other player who is likely to play for England.

The England skipper Nasser Hussain said the Australian request to take the famed Ashes Urn back to Australia was a reasonable one, provided they can assure about its safety. The 100-plus years old urn is in a rather brittle condition and contains the burnt remains of a bail used during England series victory in Australia in 1882-83.
