Coca-Cola Triangular in Zimbabwe :

The law of averages finally caught up with the Indian team, when it lost the Coca Cola tri-series final by 16 runs to West Indies at Harare. The Indians were on a roll after winning four matches in a row in this tournament. Sent into bat, the West Indies set India a target of 291, but India could manage only 274-8 from their 50 overs.

West Indian keeper Ridley Jacobs who was suspended by the South African match referee Dennis Lindsay for the next three one-day internationals against Kenya, for "cheating", will now not play the second Test match between Zimbabwe and West Indies starting at Bulawayo from July 27. The match referee revoked his earlier decision and has now imposed this new suspension. The suspension was due to Jacobs' stumping of Indian batsman Virender Shewag in the last preliminary match at Harare when it was clearly shown to have been effected without the ball in his hand. Jacobs then chose not to call back the batsmen after the umpire ruled him out on appeals from the other close in fielders. Meanwhile the West Indies Cricket Board has decided that Ridley Jacobs will not be touring Kenya after the completion of the Zimbabwe tour. Courtney Browne from Barbados would replace him.

The Ashes Tour :

England has conceded a huge lead of 282 runs in the first Ashes Test at Birmingham. In reply to England's total of 294 the Australians made a mammoth 576 on the third day. At close the home team were 48-1.

Miscellaneous :

Indians cricketers Saurav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar are among those who have been threatened by the Pakistani based militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba. The terrorist group has threatened to kidnap the players and hold them as hostages. The threats to the players came to light when some members of the group were apprehended by Thane (in Maharashtra) police some months ago. Interrogations revealed that the militant group had prepared a list of persons who would be kidnapped to secure certain political benefits. Indian hockey player Dhanraj Pillay has also received similar threats.
