A century stand by Jacques Kallis and Gary Kirsten helped South Africa reach 130-1 at close of play on the second day in reply to the West Indian total of 304. Earlier a stylish half-century by the new West Indian skipper Carl Hooper (69), who completed 1,000 first-class runs for the season, and his ninth wicket stand of 62 with Mervyn Dillon helped them to a respectable target of 304.  Australia announced their 14 players to play the one-day games in India starting on March 25. Michael Bevan, Darren Lehmann, Ian Harvey, Andrew Symonds and Nathan Bracken will replace Michael Slater, Justin Langer, Colin Miller, Michael Kasprowicz and Matthew Hayden. The one-dayers begin in Bangalore on March 25, followed by in Pune on March 28, Indore on March 31, Visakapatnam on April 3 and Goa on April 6. Contradictory to the reports that were carried yesterday it has been now confirmed by West Indian match referee Cammie Smith that Australian opener Michael Slater will be playing in the second Test at Kolkata. Slater who was involved in an argument with umpire Venkatraghavan and later on with the batsman Rahul Dravid was let off with a warning soon after the incident. He then gave a radio interview in which he said the whole issue was blown out of proportion. Although, this radio interview was viewed by match referee Smith in breach of the ICCs Player Code of Conduct, Slater was handed a one-match suspension on condition of his good behaviour. Earlier reports however incorrectly implied that he was suspended from the Test at Kolkata, which was not true. Meanwhile Indian batsman Rahul Dravid, who is a viral fever may miss the Calcutta Test match. However the team management is monitoring his progress and is hopeful for a speedy recovery. An absorbing final day's play lies in store at Kandy in the second Test between England and Sri Lanka. England require 70 runs to square the series, while Sri Lanka need six wickets to seal the series two-nil. England opener Michael Atherton and Sri Lankan keeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara have escaped with a reprimand following their clash during the second Test at Kandy. The two were involved in a finger pointing exchange and were ordered to appear before match referee Hanumant Singh for a talking to. Hanumant Singh has warned both the teams that any more bad behaviour would be dealt with very seriously. England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff will be flying to Sri Lanka for the one-day series. Flintoff however expressed his doubts over his ability to bowl in matches. He has a history of back problems that have emerged on and off and said he has tried to alter his bowling action to ease the pressure on his back. Flintoff has been through a training schedule since December and hopes to do well in Sri lanka.
Zimbabwe Cricket Union has announced its itinerary of the tour of South Africa to Zimbabwe in August/Sept this year. The home series will consist of two Tests and three one-dayers. South Africa Police win the third International Police Cricket Festival by defeating the Royal Barbados Police by 28 runs in the final. The tournament was held in England. Earlier in the semis the South Africans beat the Western Australians by six wickets, while the Barbados team beat Victoria Police team by 74 runs. A three member independent commission of inquiry including West Indian Clive Lloyd will probe into the match-fixing allegations in Sharjah. The commission who met with the CBFS officials this week, will reconvene in UK to probe further. The other members of the commission are George Staple, a legal expert and Brig. Mohammad al-Mualla, a high-ranking police officer from Emirates. The probe is being conducted following former BCCI president IS Bindra's allegations of irregularities at Sharjah. Incidentally Sharjah has the distinction of hosting more one-day internationals than any other venue in the world. Banned from cricket for life for his role in match fixing former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin is getting his life back on track. At a press conference to announce the launch of his new event-management company (Azhar Sangeetha Management Services Limited) Azhar said the aim of the ASMS was to bring entertainment to the entertainment starved people of Hyderabad. He however refused to answer any questions on the match fixing issue and also on the performance of the Indian team in the ongoing Australia series. In his new avtar as businessman Azhar said he got to watch cricket only off and on due to his engagements. He also did not rule out a stint in politics. Former Zimbabwe captain and born now coach of the England cricket team, Duncan Fletcher has been denied a British passport. After racial tensions in Zimbabwe, Fletcher had shifted his family to South Africa but took up the coaching job in England soon after.
