From Springboks to Proteas
The Springboks, who played their first Test way back in 1889, were finally finding their feet in the 1960s and challenging the unquestioned supremacy Australia and England. The flowering of players like the Pollock brothers, Graeme and Peter, Mike Procter and Eddie Barlow placed the team on the threshold of greatness.
The South African team of 1970 was recognised as the best in the world. They had just completed a 4-0 whitewash of the Australians when they were expelled from nearly every international sporting federation due to their apartheid policy.
The seeds of their ouster were sown when the 1968 English tour of South Africa was cancelled. The SA authorites refused entry to Basil D'Oliveira, a'Cape Coloured' cricketer, and that led to the country being banned.
On November 10, 1991, South Africa returned to International Cricket after a 21-year-gap -- against India, again, at Calcutta. A look at SA's 11 years in international cricket.
