From Springboks to Proteas

Clive Rice, an all-rounder of undisputed quality, was selected to captain South Africa against India on their return to international cricket. They say, he was as good as Ian Botham, Kapil Dev, Richard Hadlee and Imran Khan. But by now he was past his prime.

The Proteas, as they call themselves now in a bid to erase memories of the apartheid, played as if they had never been away.

At the time Rice had said: "I know how Neil Armstrong felt when he stood on the moon."
