Miandad in 10m contract with PCB
June 06, 2003 15:11 IST
More than two months after taking charge, Pakistan coach Javed Miandad finally signed a lucrative Rs (Pak) 10 million a year contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board before leaving with the team for England.
Miandad's contract, which would include a monthly salary of 8,000 US dollars, is commensurate with the salary and perks enjoyed by previous coach Richard Pybus in the run up to the World Cup.
Miandad, who was appointed coach immediately after the World Cup in South Africa, had delayed signing on a contract apparently due to differences over his salary and perks. He guided the team in the one-day tournaments in Sharjah and Sri Lanka recently without a contract.
However, he finally signed after being told by the PCB that any further delay would lead to audit complications, local daily The News reported.
Miandad was given the contract on Wednesday in Rawalpindi when the team assembled for a reception hosted by Board chairman Lt Gen Tauqir Zia and he signed it on Thursday.
The tenure of the contract is not known.
"Miandad was not pushed to sign the contract because he knew whenever he did sign it the contract would be valid from the date he took over as Pakistan coach and he would receive all back-dated payments," said a PCB official.
