Sami struggling to be fit for second Test
October 22, 2003 15:13 IST
Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Sami is struggling to be fit for the second Test against South Africa starting on Friday in Faisalabad.Pakistan manager Haroon Rasheed said on Wednesday that the 22-year-old fast bowler was suffering from a viral infection of the stomach.
"He is feeling very weak and has had problems with intake of food. He also has fever. At present we are not sure if he will be able to play in the second test," Rasheed said.
"We will know before the match if his condition has improved. But only he can decide if he is fit to play in the test," he added.
Pakistan are also likely to be without fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar for the Faisalabad test as he is banned for three matches and has a hamstring strain.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appealed against the ban to the International Cricket Council (ICC) and former Australian captain Richie Benaud is due to make a decision this week.
Akhtar was suspended by match referee Clive Lloyd after being found guilty of using abusive language towards South Africa spinner Paul Adams on the first day of the first test in Lahore.
"Akhtar is taking treatment for his injury and he is with the team. Again in his case even if he is available to play he will have to undergo a fitness test to confirm whether he is 100 percent fit to last the match," Rasheed said.
Akhtar and Sami played vital roles in Pakistan's eight-wicket win over South Africa in the first test. Sami played with high fever, while Akhtar limped off the field on the fourth day and was initially expected to be out for three weeks.
