England vs South Africa

Fifth Test, Day 1

A brilliant throw from English captain Michael Vaughan (not in photograph) finds counterpart Graeme Smith short of the crease.

Smith, who started the series with double centuries in the first two Tests, has scored 677 runs from four Tests, at an average of 96.71.

With 18 scored from the first innings in the final Test, Don Bradman's record series aggregate of 974 runs -- that once seemed in reach when the South African skipper scored 576 runs after two Tests -- may be a bridge too far for Smith with just one inning left. Smith also fell short of Bradman's 625 (304, 244 and 77) against England in 1934, the record for the highest aggregate in three consecutive innings.
