India call for replacement for Laxman

July 26, 2004 11:23 IST

India have called for a replacement to join them at the Asia Cup to cover for batsman V V S Laxman, who is suffering from a bruised knee.

Laxman first injured his left knee when he was hit by a ball in practice in Dambulla before India's match against Sri Lanka last weekend.

The injury was aggravated during a net session on Friday and Laxman was forced out of India's clash against Pakistan on Sunday. Pakistan won the game by 59 runs.

"We have called for a replacement for Laxman because his knee won't recover in time for tomorrow," said captain Sourav Ganguly. "There is a lot of haematoma in the knee which the doctor says cannot be taken off," he added.

India's next match, a game they must win to qualify for the final on August 1, is against Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
