Murali bereaved; to miss Tuesday's match

July 26, 2004 19:27 IST

Spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan will sit out of Sri Lanka's last Super League match against India in the Asia Cup in Colombo on Tuesday following the death of his grandfather.

Sri Lankan team sources said on Monday that Muralitharan had gone to Kandy to be with his family.

Sri Lanka, who have already qualified for the final with two victories in the Super League stage, are also likely to be without wicketkeeper-batsman Kumara Sangakkara, who is running high fever.

Left-arm seamer Chaminda Vaas could also be rested for the day-night encounter at the Premadasa stadium.

Vaas could be replaced by seamer Lasith Malinga while Romesh Kaluwitharana could come in for Sangakkara.

The absence of the three seasoned players from the Sri Lankan squad would immensely benefit India, who must win the match to make it to the August 1 final.
