India retain team for third Test

Deepti Patwardhan in Mohali | March 13, 2006 17:02 IST

India will go into the third and final Test against England [Images], beginning in Mumbai on March 18, with the same team that won the second Test in Mohali on Monday.

The hosts won the second Test by nine wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Munaf Patel [Images], who was awarded his first Test cap, finished with a match haul of seven wickets and drew praise from all quarters, particularly the Board of Control for Cricket in India's chairman of selectors, Kiran More.

"He had been bowling well for the past couple of seasons in domestic cricket. All he needs is some match experience. He always had the pace, but now he has learned to bowl in the right areas, using the swing and yorkers to his advantage," More said, after the selection committee met in Mohali on Monday.

More said the selectors were also satisfied with 17-year-old debutant Piyush Chawla's [Images] bowling.

"With two spinners already playing he didn't get enough chance. And in the 12 overs he got he didn't bowl badly."

Chawla was taken for some big runs by Kevin Pietersen [Images] in the first innings but finished well, taking the wicket of England captain Andrew Flintoff [Images] in the second.

There is keen competition in the fast bowling department, with Munaf, S Sreesanth [Images] and R P Singh all making an impact with the limited opportunities they have got. Speedsters VRV Singh and Abid Nabi also trained with the Indian team during the Mohali Test.

More also said the committee is looking to build a pool of 6-8 fast bowlers and there are a few spinners, like Ramesh Powar [Images] and Amit Mishra, on their radar.

The team: Rahul Dravid [Images] (captain), Virender Sehwag [Images], Sachin Tendulkar [Images], VVS Laxman, Wasim Jaffer [Images], Mohammad Kaif, Yuvraj Singh [Images], Mahendra Singh Dhoni [Images], Irfan Pathan [Images], S Sreesanth, R P Singh, Anil Kumble [Images], Harbhajan Singh [Images], Munaf Patel, Piyush Chawla.

Coach: Greg Chappell [Images]
