Young Gujarat off-spinner Mohnish Parmar was today omitted from the West Zone Duleep Trophy squad despite claiming 52 first class wickets in the current season in 11 ties at under-20 per victim.
Parmar, a 20-year-old Gandhinagar-born player, has taken 41 wickets in eight Ranji matches in the 2008-09 season but was left out as the zonal selectors opted for stocky Mumbai [Images] off spinner Ramesh Powar [Images] who has grabbed 34 wickets from nine matches.
Parmar's chest-on action, which resembles Sri Lanka's [Images] world record setter Muthiah Muralitharan's [Images] a lot, came under the scrutiny of the International Cricket Council [Images] in 2006 after his participation in the under 19 World Cup in Sri Lanka.
The Indian Cricket Board was asked to send him for corrective measures after his delivery style was found not to be conforming to the laws of the game.
The West Zone squad would be led by prolific opener Wasim Jaffer [Images] who led Mumbai to their 38th Ranji Trophy title last week.
West start their campaign against East Zone in the four-day semi finals starting at the Brabourne Stadium here on anuary 29.
The squad: Wasim Jaffer (Mumbai, capt.), Parthiv Patel [Images] (Gujarat, v-capt. and wk), Ajinkya Rahane (Mumbai), Cheteshwar Pujara (Saurashtra), Kedar Jadhav, Ajay Shrikhande (both Maharashtra), Bhavik Thakkar (Gujarat), Abhishek Nayar, Dhawal Kulkarni (both Mumbai), Sidharth Trivedi (Gujarat), Samad Fallah (Maharashtra), Ramesh Powar (Mumbai), Rajesh Pawar, Azhar Bhilakia and Ajitesh Argal (all Baroda).
