About the ground :

The Englishmen's love for the willow, sports and club life originated humming activity of cricket by 1865 at Chepauk green. The present Madras Cricket Club (MCC) pavilion was built in 1892. The area of the ground and structures occupy nearly 20 acres.

The famous Madras Presidency matches - between the local Indians and the Europeans began at this ground in 1915-16. Douglas Jardine's England team played the first ever Test at this venue in February 1934. India, in fact, won their first ever Test match at this venue in February 1952 when they beat England by an innings and eight runs in the fifth and final Test.

From 1955 to 1965, all Test matches in Madras were played at the Nehru (Corporation) Stadium. However, it was only in 1965 that the Tamil Nadu (then Madras) Cricket Association became lessees of the ground, when a gigantic stadium with all modern amenities was built at a cost of Rs. two crores. The seating capacity was about 50,000. Since 1967 all Test matches have been played at the Chepauk. In September 1986 the second ever tied Test match was witnessed at this venue.

The Chepauk crowd is reputed to be the most knowledgeable and appreciative in the country. This was proved when those present gave a standing ovation to Saeed Anwar after his record-breaking 194 against India in the Independence Cup match in 1997 and again when Pakistan won the Test in 1999.
