Congress workers are confident that the three-time MP will wrest the seat back from the Shiv Sena. Dutt is also campaigning for Suresh Shetty, the local candidate for the legislative assembly. Out of the 288 assembly seats in the state, the Congress and its allies won 80 in 1995. The BJP-SS won 138. In the 1998 Lok Sabha poll, the Congress won 33 of the 48 seats, the BJP-SS won 10.
