Nifty gains 20 points

Pivotals gained smartly on the National Stock Exchange following good buying support from institutional investors.

The S P CNX Nifty index opened at 846.90 points, touched the day's high of 868.05 points, fell to touch the day's low of 846.90 points and ended at 866.50, showing a gain of 20.05 points against the previous close of 846.45 points.

The CNX Nifty junior closed higher by 2.25 points to 1468.15 points against the previous close of 1465.90 points, S P CNX Defty gained by 15.70 points to 705.40 points against the previous close of 689.70 points, CNX-500 moved up by 7.35 points to 590.67 points from the last close of 583.32 points.

The CNX Midcap-200 gained marginally by 0.55 points to 513.87 points.

The total traded volume stood at Rs 14.4. Over 620,000 shares were traded in 191,080 trades.

The debenture turnover was Rs 162,500.

As many as 491 shares gained, 406 declined and 100 held steady and 46 securities hit their price bands today, a release said.

The most actively traded scrips were ITC, with a total turnover of Rs 4.80 billion, Reliance 1.64 billion and Satyam Comp Rs 1.28 billion.

Other actively traded scrips were Zee Telefilm (Rs 858.7 million), SBI N (Rs 761.2 million), Pentafour S (Rs 641.1 million), Castrol (Rs 453.1 million), MTNL (Rs 359.5 million), Tata Tea (Rs 241.6 million), Silver Line (Rs 223.4 million), Infosys Tech (Rs 220.8 million), BHEL (Rs 207.4 million), ACC (Rs 160.5 million), L and T (Rs 145 million), Hind Lever (Rs 132.5 million), HCL HP (Rs 127.3 million), Tisco (Rs 115.8 million), Telco (Rs 111.1 million), Dr Reddy (Rs 100 million), Rolta (Rs 85.1 million), BFL Software (Rs 77 million), Guj Amb Cem (Rs 67.3 million), Hindalco (Rs 66.3 million), Srivishnu Cehm (Rs 63.9 million), BSES (Rs 57.5 million).

The top five S P Nifty gainers were M&M Rs 170.35 (157.70), Reliance Rs 114.70 (Rs 106.25), Ind Rayon Rs 126.65 (117.75), Hindalco Rs 433.95 (404.85) and E I Hotels Rs 167.55 (159.75).

The major losers were Indo Gulf Rs 30.70 (31.25), G E Ship Rs 22.55 (Rs 22.85), Arvind Mill Rs 32.05 (Rs 32.25), Ranbaxy Rs 507.85(510.05) and HDFC Bank Rs 58.20 (Rs 58.40), Ashok Ley Rs 26.00 (26.50) and Thermax Rs 177.95.

The foreign institutional investors made purchases worth Rs 353.4 million against sales of Rs 229.4 million, registering a net inflow of Rs 124 million.

The mutual funds and domestic financial institutional investors made heavy selling worth Rs 62.7 million against sales of Rs 47.4 million, with a net outflow of Rs 152 million.

The wholesale debt market of NSE witnessed trades worth Rs 2.70 billion. The 11.55 per cent government loan maturing in 2001 was traded for Rs 900 million at a weighted yield of 11.51 per cent.

The11.68 per cent government loan maturing in 2002 was traded for Rs 600 million at a weighted yield of 11.66 per cent and the 12.22 per cent government loan maturing in 2008 was traded at a weighted yield of 12.15 per cent.
