Kanchi swami underlines value-based banking for safer economy
Delivering his discourse on value-based banking in Bombay, the JagadGuru (jagad=universe; guru=master) said there was a crying need to stop the migration of the rural populace to urban areas. All efforts should be made to gainfully employ the rural folk in the place of their birth, he added. In this endeavour, banks could play a leading role as they had the wherewithal and the power of persuasion by which they could emerge as a crystallising agent in generating a better economic atmosphere.
The Sankaracharya, without meaning to criticise anybody, said many of the Hindu religious organisations were placing emphasis on rituals than actual social service. Their priorities need to be corrected as works which help the poor directly, both materially and spiritually, should be taken up first, he added.
