Kerala electorate up by 400,000

The electorate in Kerala, where elections will be held to 20 Lok Sabha seats, has increased by 400,000, Chief Electoral Officer P J Thomas said.

He said the number of voters in the coming election will be 21 million. There will be 23,333 polling booths in the state, with 130,000 government staff detailed for election duty. As for counting centres, there will be 140 (seven per constituency).

Thomas said counting would commence at 0800 hours on March 2. The results were expected to be out by midnight. Mobile phones would not be allowed to be taken inside polling booths and counting centres.

He said photo identity cards would not be mandatory for voting as only five million cards have been issued so far.
