E-Mail this report to a friend

Banned National Liberation Front of Tripura guerrillas gunned down five non-tribals and shot at 10 others in North Tripura last night.

Police sources said today that heavily armed NLFT rebels stormed into the Sripur local market under the Fatikroy police station and fired indiscriminately, killing three people on the spot.

Twelve others were critically injured in the attack. Two of them succumbed to their injuries in a hospital.

Before leaving the area, the militants also burnt down a few shops and a seed godown of the state agriculture department.

Superintendent of Police Nepal Das along with other officials and additional security forces have rushed to the spot and launched a massive combing operation.

This is the second attack by the militants in markets within 25 days in Tripura.

Earlier, on November 14, All Tripura Tiger Force guerrillas attacked the Panchabati market in West Tripura and massacred 18 people and injured 10 others.

Since November 14, at least 43 people, including 32 civilians, had been killed by the ATTF and NLFT militants in Tripura.

In another incident, militants kidnapped a villager and beat up some others at Kalyanpur in West Tripura yesterday.

Meanwhile, life was paralysed in the Killa area of South Tripura district today by a 12-hour bandh called by the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist.

The bandh was called to protest against the killing of their party leader Durlav Debbarma by militants on Tuesday.

Militants had released five teachers kidnapped by them on November 18. One of the teachers who had been injured in captivity was admitted to a local hospital.
