ASSEMBLY POLL '98

Jaya blasts home ministry over Madani issueAll India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham general secretary J Jayalalitha today condemned the revocation of the detention of People's Democratic Party chairman Abdul Nasser Madani under the National Security Act on the ground that the detention order was not furnished in the language of his choice. She said this showed the incompetent, inefficient and ineffective functioning of the Union home ministry. In a statement, she alleged that the revocation, paving the way for the release of Madani on bail, would create suspicion in the minds of the people that Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani was working in tandem with extremist outfits. She said Madani, who had allegedly supplied explosives to the banned fundamentalist outfit "Al-Umma" for the February 14, 1998 Coimbatore blasts and arrested after a herculean task by the vigilant police, should not be allowed to go scot-free, but put behind the bars under the due process of law. Claiming that the extremists responsible for the serial blasts lodged in Madras and Coimbatore jails were going out of control and storing arms and ammunition in their cells, she said under these circumstances the release of such 'a dangerous extremist' because of the administrative debacle would only harm the security and integrity of the country. It was rather strange that Advani, the main target of the serial blasts, should have taken one full year to visit the city again and console the families of the victims, she added. UNI
