NLFT guerrillas blow up police vehicles , 8 killed

E-Mail this report to a friend

National Liberation Front of Tripura guerrillas today blew up two police vehicles with landmines killing eight policemen and critically wounding five others in south Tripura's Banduar area.

Superintendent of Police (operation) Jaydeb Das said the militants decamped with nine rifles belonging to the policemen.

''The NLFT rebels had laid a booby trap,'' Das said. ''As the first vehicle was blown up by the landmine, the militants hurled powerful grenades killing seven jawans and injuring six,'' he added. One of the injured later succumbed in a nearby hospital.

Last week the guerrillas had massacred 18 non-tribals in west Tripura's Panchabati village market.

A massive combing operation has been launched jointly by the Tripura State Rifles, the Central Reserve Police Force and the Assam Rifles to nab the militants.

Senior police officials including Inspector General of Police (law and order) K Salim Ali are supervising the operation.
