Curfew lifted in Tripura, rebels kill 3

Tribal guerillas killed three villagers, including a woman, and injured two, while curfew was lifted from the violence-hit West Tripura district today.

The police today said armed militants killed three tribal villagers and injured two others at Dafadar Para under Kalyanpur police station in West Tripura district last night. The rebels stormed the victims' house and killed them with sharp weapons.

Security forces have rushed to the spot and launched a manhunt to nab the militants.

West Tripura district magistrate Manoj Kumar said the 32-hour curfew, which had been imposed in the area at 2200 hrs on Wednesday was lifted this morning. The shoot-at-sight orders, which were issued in Jirania police station areas following large-scale ethnic violence since Monday last, was not extended beyond 0600 hrs.

It was not decided yet whether curfew would be re-imposed in the evening, the district magistrate said, adding that some miscreants had burnt down some houses near the curfew-bound areas last night.

A senior police official, supervising the security measures in the trouble-torn areas, said paramilitary and other security forces have been asked to maintain maximum vigil in the Jirania areas where more than 10,000 people have been rendered homeless. The security forces would take stern action, including firing, against those indulging in violence and arson.

The arson, attacks and counter-attacks started on Monday morning after a tribal youth sustained bomb injury at Chakbasta. Since then more than 500 huts belonging to 250 families of both tribals and non-tribals were burnt down by frenzied mobs in the twelve villages under the Jirania police station areas.

Over a hundred people have been arrested in connection with the violence.
