Sujit Chakraborty in Agartala

In the biggest attack this year, tribal guerrillas on Saturday massacred at least 12 villagers and wounded seven others at Khas Kalyanpur in West Tripura district, a fortnight before the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections.

The police said about 25 heavily armed guerrillas belonging to the National Liberation Front of Tripura stormed the village and the adjacent market and set fire to several houses and shops. As the villagers came out of their houses, the guerrillas rained bullets from their automatic weapons killing twelve people on the spot.

Seven villagers were injured in the attack and they were removed to G B Hospital where their condition was stated to be critical. The militants also kidnapped three villagers and looted valuables from their houses.

A red alert has been sounded throughout West Tripura district.
