NLFT ultras ransack Buddhist temple

Insurgents of banned National Liberation Front of Tripura ransacked a Buddhist temple at Almara village in South Tripura district on Tuesday night and took away some scriptures and the Buddha idol, police said on Wednesday.

A group of armed insurgents raided the temple in the tribal-dominated village in Sabroom sub-division and took away musical instruments besides idol and scriptures.

The Baptist insurgents had recently served notices in the hill areas that they would take stern action against villagers if they performed any religious activity other than Christianity, police said.

The ultras on Sunday shot dead one Joulushmani Jamatiya at Tuharchong village in the district on his way to attend a meeting of the hoda ocra, social and religious head of the Jamatiya community.

The hoda ocra recently called upon the people of the Jamatiya community to resist the insurgents' operation and save their own religion.

Police have launched a search operation to nab the culprits.
