Security cover for families of ULFA ultras

The Unified Command, formed to combat militancy in Assam, on Tuesday decided to provide security cover to the families of top United Liberation Front of Asom leaders in the wake of recent attacks on them.

The operation group of the Unified Command on Tuesday met at the army's Narengi cantonment and expressed concern on the attack on the families of top ULFA cadres, official sources said in Guwahati.

"The operation group viewed with concern the attack on the families of top ULFA cadres and decided that security cover would be given to the families of top leaders," they said adding families of other ULFA cadres would be provided security on specific request to the local police.

The meeting worked out the thrust of future operations and discussed the mode of deployment of additional para-military forces recently sent by the Centre.

Unidentified gunmen have of late targeted families of ULFA leaders in what is regarded as a backlash to the attacks on Hindi-speaking people of the state.

Tuesday's meeting was attended by head of the operational command, Lt Gen Mahesh Vij, Director General of Police Hare Krishna Deka, additional DGP G M Srivastava, Inspector General of Police (Central Reserve Police Force) P N Ramachandran, state additional chief secretary M S Pangtey, home secretary M K Barooah and senior officers of the intelligence wing.

Earlier, Lt Gen Vij and the DGP met Governor Lt Gen (retd) S K Sinha and briefed him on the prevailing law and order situation.
