Four CRPF jawans sentenced to
life imprisonment in Tripura

Four Central Reserve Police Force personnel, including a sub-inspector, were sentenced to life imprisonment by a sessions court in Tripura on the charge of killing a head constable of the Tripura police.

Amitava Dasgupta, additional sessions judge of Dharmanagar in North Tripura, sentenced the four under sections 302/307/353 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code on Wednesday.

According to the prosecution, sub-inspector Ranvir Singh and constables Rajkumar Singh, Bedmani Mishra and Somnath Singh - all of the 97th CRPF battalion - had an altercation with organisers of a local cultural group over entry to the Dharmanagar town hall during a cultural programme on July 8 in 1996 leading to police intervention.

The enraged jawans later returned with arms and opened fire at the police killing the head constable.
