Kanishka bombing: Canada to send more investigators to India

TORONTO (AFP) - Canadian authorities plan to send more investigators to India as their probe into the 1985 Air India bombing continues, a spokeswoman for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said on Wednesday.

"Throughout the 15 years of the investigation, obviously members of the investigation have gone out to India, and since the investigation is still continuing we are anticipating that investigators will be making future trips out to India," said Cate Galliford, who speaks for the RCMP's Air India Task Force.

Galliford, speaking from Vancouver, British Columbia, refused to comment on when those trips may take place or what their purpose may be.

Police have arrested and charged two men - Ripudaman Singh Malik, 53, and Ajaib Singh Bagri, 51 - in connection with the bombing of Air India Flight 182, which blew up off the coast of Ireland killing all 329 people on board. The flight was enroute to New Delhi and Bombay.

A third person was arrested and then released, and police said he remains a person of interest.

The RCMP have said they will be making more arrests in the case. Their 15-year investigation has long centered on the large Sikh community in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Malik and Bagri, both arrested October 27, have appeared in court, but have yet to enter pleas or apply for bail.
