16 killed in Tripura in fresh ethnic clashes

In fresh outbreak of ethnic violence, 16 people, eight of them non-tribals, were killed and several houses burnt on Sunday in North Tripura district, a top police official said.

A group of armed insurgents belonging to the National Liberation Front of Tripura raided Barahaldi village early Sunday and fired indiscriminately, killing seven non-tribals on the spot and injuring four, Inspector-General of Police Kishore Jha said.

One of the injured later succumbed to injuries, he said.

In a swift retaliatory attack, a group of non-tribals attacked the tribal-inhabited areas of the village and neighbouring areas and killed eight tribals. They also set ablaze 30 houses belonging to tribals, Jha said.

DIG (range) K Nagraj and SP (North) Punit Rastogi are camping in the area with heavy reinforcement.

On November 15, six persons, including three tribals and as many non-tribals, were killed in the troubled sub-division.

Three tribals were killed when the United Bengali Liberation Front rebels hurled bombs at a jeep at Shuknacherra. In retaliation, a group of tribals killed three non-tribals. Twenty-one houses were also burnt down in arsoning by both sides.
