Sangh Parivar opposes
fashion show in Orissa

M I Khan in Bhubaneswar

Sangh Parivar outfits are up in arms against model Madhu Sapre's mega fashion show in Sambhalpur in western Orissa.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vishwa Parishad, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, Sankar Bharti and Hindu Jagran Sammukhya have threatened to disrupt the fashion show, planned for the first week of November.

The show organisers are planning the show to promote the world famous Sambhalpuri sari.

"It is really shocking that these organisations are opposed to the show," a spokesperson of the fashion show's organising committee said.

The ABVP and VHP leaders are campaigning against the show to save Oriya culture and tradition. "If the controversial model Madhu Sapre wears a Sambhalpuri sari, it will be an insult to Sambhalpuri and Orissa," said ABVP leader Biswa Ranjan Pujari.

The ABVP has appealed to Sambhalpur to join hands with them and oppose such fashion, which is a threat to the age-old traditions of the place.

The organisations said they were against the show as it only aims at exhibiting women's bodies.

The outfits have requested the district administration to take proper steps to prevent such a fashion show in Sambhalpur. "If any law and order problem arises on the day of the show, the district administration will be responsible," they warned.

A showroom owner of Sambhalpuri saris in Bhubaneswar told rediff.com that opposition to the show was nothing but the ''madness of some people who are narrow-minded and live with a medieval mindset''.

"If a model like Madhu Sapre promotes the sari, it will certainly help," he said.

The Sangh Parivar leaders feel that Sapre is not worth promoting the sari, which symbolises Orissa's culture. "Sapre is just showing her body. How can she promote Sambhalpuri saris," asked an ABVP leader.
